I have known people who have done this successfully. A short term injury or an injury that is expected to heal eventually would not be enough. You would have to be experiencing chronic pain and be disabled for this to work. Your doctor would have to prescribe the item for you and then it would have to be approved through disability or through your insurance. Even then you may have to battle and argue with them a little bit but it can and has been done in the past.
